A Guardian is someone who is appointed in a Will as a legal Guardian of a child or children under eighteen if both parents die.

This is a very important decision and should not be taken lightly.  There are many things that should be considered when appointing Guardians –

-         The financial implications

-         Location

-         Age of the Guardians

-         Their situation (are they settled; in a stable relationship; etc.)

-         The relationship with the child or children

We always advise that you speak with potential Guardians before appointing them in your Will.

You may have specific ideas of how you wish your children to be brought up and therefore it is a good idea to write a letter and discuss these with Guardians so they are aware.
